Michelle Obama Defies Stereotypes

I get a little frustrated when every mention of Michelle Obama includes the fact that she's African American (as if we couldn't see that), but this story was much better than yesterday's article (sigh). Enjoy:

Hello there,

The white media continues to make race an issue with Michelle...did they say that Laura Bush would change stereotypes of white women from the South??

The characterization of Michelle as a "special" negro is also racist...it implies that an educated, Ivy Leaguer who is black is something just oh-so-rare and so UNLIKE all blacks...

Some black folks are even feeding into this mindset from what I am reading at many blogs.

It seems some black folks are just so amazed to see a black woman who had her children DURING marriage and not before marriage and who has been in a loving marriage....

I think that it would behoove us to examine what we have accepted as a norm...and are WE fueling the negative stereotypes of blacks by our own mentalities? We need to really think long and hard about that...

Lord, why did I the read comments about the article and even the above comment. Everyone is SO negative, that it just blows me to pieces.

Someone commented that Michelle Obama is the reason they are against affirmative action because it just hands things to unqualified people. I was thinking WTF. This woman's husband ran a sucessful campaign, won the presidency and the last time I checked the only qualification for being first lady is being married to the President.

I agree that Michelle Obama is going to make some huge changes in the minds of all America and especially black women.

Most people don't think on the surface black women cant do XYZ or be XYZ, but subconsciously people do believe there are limits to what black women can do. A lot of times we take ourselves out of society, like we're above society or think differently than society, but we don't. We're a part of it and we contribute to negative stereotypes and I am elated that we have a black woman as first lady.

@ the commenter above, Laura Bush didn't need to change stereotypes about white women because there are so many white women that no one sees a negative image of a white woman and falsely belives that ALL white women are like that.

This country has a long way to go and race relations will never be perfect, but Thank God for the Obamas. Killing stereotypes and taking names, daily.

It's sad that this has to be even addressed, but I think Michelle Obama will be a great role model for all women as the first lady.

She was already a great role model before her husband elected.

I agree with ClnMike 100%.

Found your spot via Ugly Black John. He speaks highly of it and I'm sure I'll be back. I invite you to stop by Sojourner's Place where the doors are always open.
